Event Details

19th September marks the day women became equals. On this day in 1893, the New Zealand government became the first in the world to grant women the right to vote! It's an incredible achievement and yet one we don't often celebrate.

So this year celebrate New Zealand's forward thinking by bringing a white camellia to place at the Suffrage Memorial Fountain. These flowers became a symbol of the women's vote and you can find them growing on plenty of trees around Auckland. If you can't get a white camellia, you could donate a $10 note with Kate Sheppard's face towards her home city, Christchurch, and the earthquake clean up.
